MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The two neighboring countries were involved in an armed conflict that lasted from September 1980 to August 1988. The fall of the regime of Saddam Hussein in Iraq in 2003 led to the normalization of relations between the two countries. In 2008, then Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad became the first Iranian leader to visit Iraq since Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution.
"[Bolstering] unity between the two countries, establishing stable security, creating joint border committees and negotiations would be beneficial to regional security," Baqeri was quoted as saying by the Tasnim news agency.
Iraqi forces backed by Kurdish Peshmerga fighters are currently preparing an assault on the city of Mosul in northern Iraq. Daesh has controlled Iraq’s second largest city for the past two years.
On Tuesday, the US military said that Iran-backed Shiite fighters in Iraq were preparing to retake Mosul.
