MADRID (Sputnik) — The Russian embassy in Spain on Wednesday confirmed the withdrawal of a request to Spanish authorities for entry of Russian warships to the Ceuta harbor for refueling on its way to Syria.
"We confirm that the request had been withdrawn," the embassy's representative said.
A group of Russian warships headed by the aircraft-carrying cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov is currently sailing to the Mediterranean Sea. The naval group was expected to come to Ceuta to take in supplies and to refuel. NATO officials have already expressed concerns that the group could be used to support Damascus in the ongoing Syrian civil war.
