On March 27, 2017, American scientists became accidental witnesses to a fierce battle between a Heterocarpus shrimp and a midwater dragonfish during the final dive of the "Discovering the Deep: Exploring Remote Pacific Marine Protected Areas" expedition. The savage shrimp impressed the researchers with its predatory behavior, as it was observed impaling and consuming the dragonfish while the victim was still alive.
